The Music We Are

The Music We Are
By:Rumi

Did you hear that winter’s over? The basil

and the carnations cannot control their

laughter. The nightingale, back from his

wandering, has been made singing master

over the birds. The trees reach out their

congratulations. The soul goes dancing

through the king’s doorway. Anemones blush

because they have seen the rose naked.

Spring, the only fair judge, walks in the

courtroom, and several December thieves steal

away, Last year’s miracles will soon be

forgotten. New creatures whirl in from non-

existence, galaxies scattered around their

feet. Have you met them? Do you hear the

bud of Jesus crooning in the cradle? A single

narcissus flower has been appointed Inspector

of Kingdoms. A feast is set. Listen: the

wind is pouring wine! Love used to hide

inside images: no more! The orchard hangs

out its lanterns. The dead come stumbling by

in shrouds. Nothing can stay bound or be

imprisoned. You say, “End this poem here,

and wait for what’s next.” I will. Poems

are rough notations for the music we are.

Ginger Bug & Kefir Water

I've been dying to try making our own fermented and homemade sodas. So I started a ginger bug & water kefir grains yesterday. (I attempted once previously but failed so this is take two!)

Anyway, I know what your thinking if you have never heard of fermented drinks. But, you can turn these weird looking concoctions into bubbly, naturally carbonated drinks for your family with NO added corn syrup, dyes or other nasty things and you can add fruits and herbs in unlimited combinations! Just in time for summer! Yay!

Check out my friend Darcey Blue's page for directions on how to make fermented drinks.  She is who first introduced me to kefir water and she makes some really tasty drinks. Now I'm dreaming up different combos in my head!

I bought my kefir water grains from Cultures for Health. I also ordered a case of bottles like these and this book on homemade sodas. Yes, I've been bitten by the bug!

I'm hoping my $75 investment will pay out. I admit to buying the occasional Coke (mostly when eating out or eating greasy food which I don't eat often) but I always feel gross after drinking some and I never finish the bottle anyway. A lot of times we get the natural sodas from the co-op but those are expensive and I'd love to be able to DIY. So, I'm hoping to save money here, be a little more self sufficient AND break an unhealthy habit! Win, win?!?

I will be sure to report back with my results soon!

UPDATE~ This experiment was an utter fail! I let them sit too long! :( Also I found out you are not supposed to culture two things side by side like this due to spores cross contaminating each other. Good to know! I will be trying again soon until I get it right!

Some Beaded Creations
